About The Event
Farida Sohrabji, PhD, is a Professor of Neuroscience and associate department chair of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at Texas A&M College of Medicine. She is the founder and director of the Women's Health in Neuroscience Program at the College of Medicine and a strong advocate for the inclusion of gender/sex differences in biomedical research.
Women’s health is the focus of Dr. Sohrabji's research, and within that very large umbrella, she is trying to understand the health risks that occur after menopause, especially the increased risk of stroke. Research from her lab shows that the aging brain does not respond to stroke in the same way as the younger brain and that drug treatments that work in younger females do not work as well in older females. In fact, they’re finding that treatments that are effective in females may not work in males. It underscores the importance of ‘personalized’ medicine and that ‘one size will not fit all.’
Dr. Sohrabji's advice to students who want to pursue a career in medicine or biomedical research? Find something you are passionate about, read voraciously, find role models, read some more, don’t be afraid to ask for help, read even more, find a group of like-minded friends and keep reading.

Farida Sohrabji, PhD, is the Joseph Shelton Professor of Neuroscience and associate department chair of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics. Sohrabji serves as the director of the Women's Health in Neuroscience Program at the College of Medicine and on the steering committee of the Texas Alzheimer's Research and Care Consortium.
She also participates in graduate training as a member of the faculty in the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience.
Dr. Sohrabji obtained a joint doctoral degree in Neurobiology & Biopsychology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and completed her post-doctoral training at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York. She joined the faculty of Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1998.
Farida Sohrabji’s research program focuses on brain-immune interactions regulated by estrogen and its implications for neuro-inflammatory diseases such as stroke in women.
She is also interested in estrogen's interactions with other endogenous and environmental endocrine mediators, including Vitamin D hormone and the peptide hormone Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF)-1.
Her current studies use an animal model to examine age and sex differences in recovery from stroke, focusing at the cellular level on the endothelium and astrocytes, which are the principal components of the blood brain barrier. At the molecular level, she and her team are examining sex and age differences in miRNA and epigenetic markers, with a view to developing biomarkers for diseases and uncovering new therapeutic targets.
Dr. Sohrabji directs a federally funded research program that focuses on sex and age differences in cerebrovascular disease, specifically biochemical and behavioral changes that occur in stroke-related injury, including brain-immune interactions, biomarkers and therapeutics for ischemic stroke. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (Stroke Council) and a member of the inaugural class Presidential Impact Fellows at the Texas A&M University.
Dr. Sohrabji's professional service includes National Institutes of Health (NIH) and American Heart Association (AHA) study sections. Dr. Sohrabji is actively involved in the training of graduate and medical students and mentorship of junior faculty.
